After the first knockout round in Champions League, the big surprise is CSKA Mockba that defeating Sevilla gain 35 position in the ranking. If we focus closer to the top, Internazionale climb from 14th to 8th place after their two wins over Chelsea, while Manchester United get closer to Barcelona challenging their 1st position.

Champions League Elo rank

In the 1960s, physics professor Arpad Elo created a rating system for evaluating chess players’ performances. After slight modifications, the Elo ranking has been in use since the 1970s in the world of professional chess.
Modern Champions League is a European football competition that, since the 1991/92 football season, took the place of the old European Cup.

What happens if one tries to use an Elo-like (playing at home or away is statistically more important than playing with white or black…) system to estimate the performance of the 137 teams that have played at least one match in the final stages of the Champions League? Well, maybe Real Madrid defeat by Olympique Lyonnais does not seem such a big surprise anymore.
